THE ONLINE VERSION OF THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS FAN CLUB OF BALTIMORE, MD. SEPTEMBER 2004 *** PAGE 2 *** PSFCOB BARS SET FOR 2004 SEASON OPENER
DIRECTIONS TO EACH LOCATION
THE PURPLE GOOSE SALOON
Coordinator-President Steve Chiurazzi
The Goose became the official headquarters of the PSFCOB at the start of the 1991 season and is known as one of the premier Steelers Bars in the country. Fans from as far as Philadelphia travel to watch games in an unbelievable exciting atmosphere. There is so much spirit that you could swear Franco is going to rumble up the middle at any time.
The Purple Goose has one large HDTV and numerous other TV's around the bar for great viewing. The hot wings are legendary at the Goose and their Primanti Bros. sandwiches make you think you're in Pittsburgh. Top that off with a cold Iron City or IC Light and you have the ultimate Steelers experience.
Opening Day at the Goose will feature a tailgate party in back of the bar starting at 9:00AM with excellent food from the Terrible Grill and draft beer from the Terrible Bar. If you have never been to the Purple Goose you couldn't pick a better time to check it out, but a word of advice, you should come early to get your choice of seats.
SHOOTERS SPORTS BAR
Coordinators-Charlotte, Teresa, Keith, Sheri, Rob
Shooters became the first expansion of the fan club in 1994 to serve fans of Anne Arundel Co. and all areas south of Baltimore. Shooters became an instant hit with Steelers Fans and helped alleviate the overcrowding that was beginning at the Purple Goose.
Through a joint effort between the fan club and Shooters a huge lighted "Steelers Fan Club Sign" was installed in front of the bar visible up and down Ritchie Highway which has always been a source of pride for the Fan Club. As soon as you enter Shooters you are struck by the friendliness of the owners, staff and of course the contingent of PSFCOB coordinators (above) who always occupy the same table.
Shooters has 2 large screen TV's and numerous others around the seating and bar areas. The food is awesome and they also specialize in Primanti Bros. sandwiches and cold Iron City and IC Light. Opening Day is always a kick at Shooters. The gang there has numerous tailgate parties and events throughout the year, I know one will be coming soon.
BULLS EYE BAR AND GRILL
Coordinators-Jack & Kar Staley, Pat & Diane Varricchio
It was the Super Bowl year of 1995 that Jack Staley decided he had enough of driving from the east side of Baltimore to the Purple Goose. The fan club occupies a large bar room of their own in back of the restaurant and although the crowds are usually large, it seems like everybody knows everybody. The group there stays in touch year around so when you go there make sure to give one of the coordinators you e-mail address.
Bulls Eye has been the Steelers headquarters for the Steelers / Ravens game since the purple scourge first descended upon Baltimore. They have had a fantastic tailgate party in back of the bar with busses to the game. Unfortunately, due to ticket problems they have announced there will be no bus this year. OK, that gives them one year to plan next years extravaganza.
Bulls Eye has one large screen TV and 7 others around the room for great viewing. The wings are great with, of course, Iron City and IC Light. A great Opening Day choice.
KRUGS PLACE
Coordinators-Terry Oliver, Dan
Anytime you travel I-70 west of Baltimore, you don't have to go far before you see more and more Black and Gold. If you ever watch a game at Krug's in Frederick you will know you are in Steelers Country. Krug's is a large place with 3 separate rooms, TV's in all of them and all packed with Steelers Fans.
The coordinators, Terry and Dan, do a great job keeping the crowd going with trivia , door prizes and raffles. Word is, if you go once, your hooked. Terry said the food is great.
Having moved from the original PSFCOB location, this Opening Day starts the 4th season at Krugs. They do a couple tailgate parties each season along with other events so watch for announcements. There has always been discussion about chartering a bus from Baltimore to Frederick for a Sunday road trip. Anyone up for that?
Krugs is easy to get to from I-70. Take E. Patrick St then a right on East St. An easy stop coming from Pittsburgh.
LOLA'S AT HEMMINGWAY'S
Coordinator, Norm Amorose
Twins Colin and Ryan Sweeney became the two newest Steeler fans who will watch all of this Super Bowl season's games at Lola's/Hemingway's. Brought into the Steeler nation on June 3rd ( parents Tom and Nancy say it was an immaculate reception). They had their first taste of action in the pre-season, dressed from head to toe (all 12 inches x two) in black and gold as they screamed the Steelers to the state championship over the Beagles.
You will be able to join them for the game against Oakland and all the regular season and play-off games again this year as owners Biana and Steve (Etna HS, class of '37 ) Arentz graciously open their doors for the fifth year to the PSFCOB. Lola's bar is located downstairs of Hemingway's Restaurant, which is on the waterfront at the east end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
Besides the spectacular views, Lola's offers the fan club members food and drink specials during every game. And because of the size, there isn't a bad seat in the house. There are raffles, contests and give a ways at selected games, and the annual pig/deck/pierogie gator has become a regulars tradition. Plus, after the fall games, there is live music outside on the deck as you celebrate the victory...not to mention watching the unbelievable sunsets.
If you're looking for a way to get your spouse to join you for games, Lola's is the answer. Upstairs, Hemingway's Restaurant, noted for their excellent fine dining , offers PSFCOB members a 15% discount on dinners. So,.... I... love...Steeler foot-ball......Lola's in the fall.....Black and Gold wins.......AND TWINS!
