CLUB NOTES

Just as little babies become very elusive once they get a few months old, here are a few announcements that "escaped" from the last edition:

* Caroline Grace Lohm born to Frederick Fan Clubbers Eric and Linda Lohm. Little Caroline was born on 1/13/00 and, at this time, is being touted as "The 1stSteeler baby of 2000". I haven't seen or heard of anyone beating it so the title stands (for now).

* Diana Mae Rach born to Member #250 Jeff Rach and his wife Sandra. Diana was born on 3/1/00 and her 7lb 10.5 oz. bundle was attached to a 19 ½ inch frame. She joins her big sister Julia in making Team Rach one to truly behold.

* Joseph Patrick Murphy II born to longtime Fan Club Member (and not a bad left fielder) Joe Murphy and his wife Liza. JP was born on 4/16/00 and is the first child for Joe and Liza. Chances are he'll be hitting golf balls and softballs in no time.

Fan Club high fives and pats on the back to PSFCOBer Alvin "THE MAN" Kornegay and his new wife Angela on their wedding which recently took place on June 17th. Alvin and Angela are both FANtastic folks and all the happiness and good fortune the world has to offer is wished upon them. In true Steeler spirit, the wedding, from the tuxedos and dresses down to the decorations at the reception, were done in Black and Gold. And Alvin wonders why he's known as "THE MAN".

This year's Annual fan Club Picnic took place last June 24th at the Vietnam Veterans of America Hall in Dundalk. The picnic almost didn't take place this summer for a number of reasons but a few Fan Club Members (who wish to remain nameless) took it upon themselves to organize things at the last minute and pulled it off. Unfortunately, the word didn't get out much before the picnic itself took place and many folks already had plans made. Nonetheless, the folks who did come out had a FANtastic time. The weather was perfect, the food was good, the beer was cold and the company, well, that speaks for itself. Thanks again to the Vietnam Vets for the top notch site and, especially, thanks to those few Fan Club members (you know who you are) for working to keep the tradition alive.

This is just my opinion but the play of third year inside linebacker John Fiala is very reminiscent of another former Steeler linebacker. Fiala came to the Steelers as a free agent three years ago and was seen as too light to effectively play the position. However, through hard work and dedication, John has grown into the consummate back up and special teams stalwart. His prototype likewise came late in the Draft (10th Round pick in 1989) and was touted as being too light and slow but his ferocity more than made up for his physical pitfalls. This player went on to play nine years for the Black 'n Gold. His name: Jerry Olsavsky.
