THE ONLINE VERSION OF THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS FAN CLUB OF BALTIMORE, MD. AUGUST, 2000 *** PAGE 3 ***
DOWN BY THE BAY
It's New!! Okay, so Lola's at Hemingways has been an official PSFCOB
location for three years now....but, owners Steve and Biana (and
Elizabeth) Arentz have remodeled to provide an even better place to
cheer our Black and Gold on to an 11-5 (you heard it here first) season.
New carpeting, new wall colors, high top tables for improved viewing,
and a great new bar to accommodate lots more crazies. Even better, there
is a brand new kitchen to crank out lots of food specials, to go along
with the fabulous drink specials that Biana and Steve offer during the
games.
During the warm fall season there is live music on the deck after the
victories, and your PSFCOB membership card entitles you to a 15%
discount on dinner upstairs at Hemingways.
If you missed last year's Pig Roast/Deck Gators, well Mike and Tina
Belasco and their crew will do another this year, and hopefully Joannie
and Rich Krason will make more of the world's greatest pierogies.
Yvonne Hebda (my lovely assistant) and I will again be holding raffles
for great Steeler prizes (and as an aside to big Mike and the Brothers
Tice ....one prize per customer).
Plaxico and the three tenors will be scoring so much that the polka
will be worn out, Holmes and Kirkland will become the best inside duo
this side of Eric and Rich Boehm, and the offensive line will open holes
that even Jim Dinges could run through.
There are lots of new Steeler decorations courtesy of Bird Dog Wheeler
and J.C. Dodd Distributing of Easton, your Eastern Shore providers of
Bud Light, Bud, Michelob and all other Anheuser Busch products.
The Steelers rededicated themselves in the off season, and made lots of
changes ....so did Lola's.
And... the view ain't too bad either. See ya there.
P.S. - After the Steelers defeat the Titans on 9/24, be sure to stick
around and listen to Bird Dog and The Road Kings. They are going to
play until around 7:00 PM, so it won't interfere with people's Monday
work day. They are the most famous and popular band on the Eastern
Shore and actually play all up and down the coast. They play a
combination of classic rock and southern rock with just a hint of
country.
In the last issue of THE BLACK AND GOLD POST, a small article appeared
extolling the virtues of spending a few days in beautiful Latrobe
attending Steeler Training Camp at Saint Vincent's College. Did you
go? I know some folks did as I saw more than a few PSFCOB T- shirts
sprinkled throughout the crowds.
My wife and daughter and I went up to attend camp on July 27th and
28th. While there, we were able to meet some of the college scouts for
the Steelers. After talking football, we were offered field passes for
the afternoon practice and we got to view the workouts up close and
personal. Afterwards, as the team was leaving the field, I was able to
secure a number of autographs from a variety of players along with
hundreds of other fans.
I must say that I now truly understand why the Pittsburgh Steelers have
such a large and strong national following. The organization is truly a
class operation from top to bottom. Players, veterans and rookies
alike, took the time to speak with the fans and sign autographs after a
sweltering afternoon session. We were fortunate enough to meet later
that evening with Steeler scouts Mark Gorscak, Phil Kreidler, Bruce
McNorton, Kelvin Fisher and even Dan Rooney, Jr. at a local watering
hole. We talked more football and it made for a FANtastic evening.
And yes, we'll be going back next summer. Hope to see you there.
The PSFCOB will kick off the 2000 campaign in grand style with an
Opening Day Tailgate Party at The Purple Goose Saloon. This is an
appropriate way to start the season as the raisins limp into Three
Rivers to become the first victim of the Mighty Steelers. The
festivities should kick off in the parking lot around 10:00 AM and will
feature The Terrible Bar and The Terrible Grill. The aroma of pit beef,
kielbasa and burgers will fill the air as our anticipation builds to the
Opening Kickoff. There is no better way to start the season so plan on
being there.
Other tailgate festivities throughout the season include:
* 10/8 at Krugs in Frederick -
This is a good opportunity to travel out west to see how Scott Demers
and the good folks in Frederick party. In only it's second year as
an Official PSFCOB location, Krugs has quickly made a name for itself as
the only place in town to watch the Black 'n Gold play every week. It's
definitely worth the trip!!!
* 10/22 at Shooters in Severna Park -
The Cleveland Clowns come to Pittsburgh for this 4:00 PM battle and
Charlotte Lipke and the PSFCOB faithful at Shooters are gearing up to
make it a special day indeed. After last year's shocking defeat at the
hands of Couch & Company, you can bet that the Steelers will be feasting
on these sissies like we will be on the food off The Terrible Grill and
it's my guess that the Clowns running game will be the only thing going
down faster than the cold beer at this pre-game party. Makes for a nice
change of pace down south.
* 10/29 at The Calgary Cattle Company -
The tailgate party behind the CCC has become a tradition for
the PSFCOB when the Mighty Steelers come to town and this year will be
no different on October 29th. The party will kickoff around 9:00 A.M. complete with
generous amounts of food and drink compliments of the Terrible Grill and
Terrible Bar. The busses will leave sometime around 11:30- 12:00 to
ensure enough time to park and get to your seats. Once again, game
tickets seem to be non-existent or outrageously priced but, have no
fear, I guarantee there will be no shortage of Black-N-Gold filling the
stands. The busses will return to Calgary immediately following the
game.
For those who don't have game tickets, feel free to come and
join the Tailgate Party then stay and watch the game at the CCC. Either
way, sounds like a fine day to me.
